Monday 24th Sept 2012 Morning

We are looking at a fairly tame opening this morning, there were no substantive leads from overseas through the weekend, and given the relatively flat nature of the offshore markets, it would appear that any movements on the open will be stock specific.

There is no particularly noteworthy economic news due today, however everyone will be keeping an eye on the dispute between Japan and China, as this certainly has the potential to develop into an event that could disrupt markets worldwide.

Should the trouble persist, I would expect to see rises in the prices of Rare Earths producers, particularly those who are unaffected by the dispute. We may also see an increase in capital flows into Gold.

Thursday 20 September 2012

Thursday 20th Sept 2012 (Afternoon)

The ASX200 ended down 21 points today, following a negative reaction to the Chinese PMI figure that was released. Weak offshore leads had the market lower in the morning, however a lower than expected PMI figure drove stocks lover through the afternoon. The energy sector was hit the hardest today, coming off 2% on the back of falling oil prices, meanwhile, materials also headed lower, giving back some of their recent gains.

Volume and value were high today, given that it was options expiry today – 2,062,769,749 and $6,551,081,990 respectively.

Interesting result in the German PMI this afternoon – the figure is still below the magic 50 mark, indicating a contraction, but it was a consolation to see it up 3 points from last time.

The Spanish 10 yr Bond Auction went off nicely, the rate was 5.67% (compared to 6.647% last auction), with rates lower in anticipation of a request to the ECB to purchase its debt. There was healthy demand for the bonds, with the volume bid 2.8 times over.
